Black Bear Innovators | Marin Skincare

Marin Skincare began when UMaine alumna Amber Boutiette ’17 couldn’t find lasting relief from severe eczema. While studying Biomedical Engineering at UMaine, she and co-founder Patrick Breeding ’19G learned from Maine lobster researcher Dr. Bob Bayer about a unique glycoprotein that helps lobsters heal and regenerate, and showed promise for repairing human skin.

A simple test formula changed everything. Amber’s skin finally began to calm and strengthen, inspiring the pair to dive into formulation, partner with an experienced chemist, and build a supply chain that up-cycles this marine ingredient directly from Maine lobster processors. The process not only reduces waste but also supports local fishermen and highlights UMaine’s long tradition of Black Bear innovation.

In 2020, they launched Marin’s Soothing Hydration Cream, a gentle, barrier-supporting moisturizer. The response from people with eczema, psoriasis, and sensitive skin helped turn their student project into a growing Maine-based brand rooted in science, sustainability, and true relief.
