Greetings to all members of the great Class of ’58! I am attempting to step into a very large pair of shoes, which were most capably filled by Jane Ledyard Lazo for 62 years. Now I am depending upon you all to share news items to help us all keep connected.
Our class was blessed for many years by the leadership and warmth of our president, Herb Cohen, who sadly passed away last November. Though we do not wish to emphasize loss, I would be remiss if I did not pay tribute to Herb’s dedication to the university, the Alumni Association, and our class for his leadership and for his unfailing optimism. He accomplished all this while giving devoted care to his beloved Judy during her lengthy illness. Let us all be grateful for Herb’s steady presence.
Warm congratulations to Roberta “Berta” Wyer Morrill on receiving the Block M Award for her service to our class and the Portland Alumnae group! Very well deserved, indeed.
Doris White Smith of Massapequa, NY, enjoyed a family party in West Bath, ME, this past summer. Happily, music is still a big part of Doris’s life!
Our classmate Bill Schroeder was recently named to the UMaine Sports Hall of Fame, recognizing his outstanding track career. Bill swept the Maine, Yankee Conference, and New England pole vault championships in his senior year. He set the UMaine indoor and school, state, and Yankee Conference outdoor records in the pole vault. A team captain, Bill also ran hurdles and set a UMaine record for the 65-yard low hurdles his senior year.
Warmest wishes to you all — and please share your news!
