Class of 1959 Spring Class Notes

We received great news in September. The University of Maine Foundation announced that classmate Blaine D. Moores had established a $2 million fund to enrich students’ historical and political studies. The fund will be used to launch a symposium series that will bring nationally prominent figures to campus for presentations and classroom conversations on history and current affairs. Congratulations, Blaine!

Julie Faulkner Vaux recently connected with Mary Ketchum County. They got together and planned annual get-togethers. Julie and Mary both make their homes in New Hampshire.

The class held a special spring meeting on May 20 at Buchanan Alumni House. President Helen Inman Boomer reviewed past and planned programs. The main item on the agenda was a dedication ceremony of the Chuck Peddle memorial. There was a tribute review of “The Father of the Personal Computer” accomplishments. This was followed by a visit to the Ferland Engineering Education and Design Center, the site of the memorial benches contributed to the university by the class in Chuck’s memory. We were pleased to have Dee Gardner ’89 of the UMaine Foundation; Ashley Nemer Twombly ’10, ’12G of the Alumni Association; Woody Hodgkins, and Blaine Moores with us.

On September 12, as part of Senior Alumni Reunion weekend, class members visited the Black Bear Exchange food pantry on campus. The Exchange is one of the beneficiaries of annual support by the class. Others are the Senior Alumni Association and the Class Student Scholarship. Visitors were Alola Giffin Morrison, Judy Kittredge Carter, Joanne Banks Miller, Evie Stevens Smith, Don and Susan Cookson, and President Boomer.

Susan and I visited Kay Sawyer Hannah ’60 in New Harbor, ME, in August. She and husband, Pete, have a beautiful home overlooking the ocean. Kay has an exhibit of five watercolor paintings in the Pemaquid Art Gallery.
