Rising Star Award

Austin Steward, M.D. ’19 has been selected to receive the Rising Star Award in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the University of Maine and his early-career leadership in service, medicine, and alumni engagement. In the years immediately following his graduation, Austin has strengthened UMaine’s reputation through meaningful professional impact, sustained service, and deep involvement with the Black Bear community.

As a UMaine undergraduate, Austin was widely recognized for his leadership and service, serving as President of the Senior Skull Society, Fraternity Leader of the Year, and a campus leader within Alpha Tau Omega, Student Government, and Black BearTHON. His work with Black BearTHON helped raise more than $37,000 for the NICU at Eastern Maine Medical Center, reflecting a commitment to service that has continued well beyond graduation.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from UMaine’s Honors College, Austin was accepted into the Tufts University School of Medicine Early Assurance and Maine Track programs. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he took a leave from medical school to serve as a senior consultant for Alpha Tau Omega’s national organization, supporting leadership development and community-building at universities across the country. He continues to volunteer in this role while pursuing his medical career.

Now completing his pediatric residency at Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital in Portland, Austin has chosen to remain in Maine to serve children and families in the community that shaped him. Alongside his clinical work, he mentors UMaine students pursuing careers in healthcare and remains actively engaged with the Senior Skull Alumni Interest Group, supporting strategic communications and alumni connections.

Through his leadership, service, and professional dedication, Austin has strengthened the University of Maine’s reputation while remaining deeply connected to the community that shaped him. His work in medicine, mentorship, and alumni engagement reflects the values and spirit celebrated by the Rising Star Award.
