Rachel Binder-Hathaway ’12

Spirit of Maine Achievement Award Recipient

Rachel Binder-Hathaway ’11 received the Spirit of Maine Achievement Award. The
award recognizes an alumnus or alumna who, within 15 years of graduation, has
achieved outstanding professional, scholarly, public, and/or entrepreneurial success.

B-H is a behavioral economist and research consultant with the United Nations, and also
consults with The World Bank. She is a Research and Teaching Fellow at Harvard,
where her work combines gender equity, behavioral science, international development,
and program evaluation. She began her work in microfinance with women in Bangladesh
as a Fulbright Scholar, while still a UMaine student, and in the decade since, she has
continued to work to improve educational and economic conditions for women and
children around the globe.
