Fogler Legacy Award
The Bourque family has been selected to receive the Fogler Legacy Award in recognition of a proud, multi-generational tradition of service, leadership, and commitment to the University of Maine. Spanning three generations of UMaine graduates, the Bourques have strengthened the University through sustained alumni engagement, volunteer leadership, philanthropy, and deep community involvement.
The family’s UMaine legacy begins with Peter Bourque ’64 and Mary Thomas Bourque ’65, whose devotion to the University has endured for more than six decades. As President of the Class of 1964, Peter has provided years of dedicated leadership, revitalizing class engagement, organizing reunions, and leading successful fundraising efforts that expanded the Class of 1964 Scholarship Endowment. His enthusiasm, creativity, and care for his classmates have helped foster participation, connection, and generosity.
The second generation, Michael Bourque ’89, Diane Bourque Smith ’90, and Thomas Bourque ’94, has carried that commitment forward through meaningful alumni leadership and service. Michael has remained deeply engaged with UMaine, serving on the University of Maine Board of Visitors and later as chair, as well as hosting and leading the Southern Maine Professionals Club, helping expand alumni engagement and support in the region. In 2023, Michael and his wife, Kendra, established the Bourque Family Scholarship to honor Peter and Mary, supporting Maine students with the greatest financial need.
The third generation continues the family’s Black Bear tradition with strong participation in University life. Grandchildren, including Marissa Smith ’20, ’22G, Elijah Smith ’22, Olivia Bourque ’23, and Isabelle Bourque ’25, have remained engaged through music, campus activities, alumni events, and class connections, reinforcing the family’s enduring presence within the UMaine community.
