Suzanne Kay Hart ’68 Alumni Service Award

Charles Stanhope ’71 has been selected to receive the Suzanne Kay Hart ’68 Alumni Service Award in recognition of his decades of devoted service to the University of Maine and its alumni community. A proud member of the Class of 1971, Charles has given generously of his time, leadership, and enthusiasm to strengthen UMaine’s connections with alumni, faculty, and students.
Charles has served the University in numerous volunteer roles, including membership on the UMaine Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2018 to 2024, where he also contributed to the Engagement and Advocacy Committees. He chaired the Distinguished Maine Professor Committee for many years, approaching the role with care, integrity, and a deep respect for faculty achievement. Charles also continues to serve on the Honors College Board of Advocates. His commitment to honoring academic excellence reflected his genuine curiosity and appreciation for the work being done across campus.
A steadfast leader for his classmates, Charles served for many years as Class Secretary, later joining the Class Executive Committee and ultimately becoming Class President. His dedication to keeping the Class of 1971 connected and engaged earned him the Golden M Award at his 50th Reunion. He also played a key role in planning and supporting the Alumni Association’s 150th Anniversary celebration, lending both historical insight and personal generosity to ensure its success.
Charles’s service extends beyond volunteer leadership. In 2008, he established the Charles V. Stanhope ’71 Honors College Study Abroad Fellowship Endowment Fund, the first study-abroad fellowship for Honors College students. His belief in public education and experiential learning has created meaningful opportunities for students to broaden their perspectives and pursue intellectual curiosity.
Whether welcoming others into the UMaine community, advocating for the value of public higher education, or supporting students and faculty, Charles has remained a passionate ambassador for his alma mater. His lifelong dedication reflects the spirit of service honored by the Suzanne Kay Hart ’68 Alumni Service Award.
