Class 1987 Fall Class Notes

As I write this, I’m seriously hoping that winter has finally passed. As you read it, we’re in the midst of summer.

In the winter 2024 class notes I wrote about Lynn Hearty Coutts taking on the position of athletic director at UMass Lowell. She is the first female to hold this position.

A Portland Press Herald article from September 2024 talked about how Lynn had not planned on taking on the role of athletic director. But she said that if you do your job the best you can, eventually someone will tap you on the shoulder.

While Lynn brought a wealth of experience as a player, coach, and administrator, she still had a lot to learn in a short period of time. College sports is changing and as the AD, she needs to empower her staff and keep an eye on the big picture.

Continuing in sports news, Patrick Kelly ’89G was inducted into the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 last August. Patrick has been the wresting coach at Camden-Rockport High School for the past 19 years. His teams have accumulated a 453-39 record including seven state titles and nine regional titles, and his wrestlers have won 31 individual state titles.

At Maine, Patrick had a 122-20 record and placed first in the NCAA Northeast Championships his junior year and second his senior year.

Dan Tremble was awarded the Norbert X. Dowd Award in February. The award recognizes Dan’s contributions to the community through his leadership roles as a Bangor city councilor, mayor, and county commissioner. Dan is also a successful businessman.

Rodney Mason was hired as the first town administrator for Owls Head this past January. Rodney is also the code enforcement officer for the town.

In some sad news, Sari Ohmart G was killed in a car crash on Interstate 95 in August 2024. She had been living in Brewer at the time.

In some personal news, I have retired after almost 15 years with InterSystems in Boston. It’s hard to believe that I finally did it, but it’s pretty exciting also.
