Greetings to my classmates of 1955.

The recipient of our Class of 1955 Scholarship for the 2017 – 2018 academic year is Ben Quimby, a sophomore studying mechanical engineering. Ben’s mother, grandmother, and father all attended the University of Maine. His grandfather, Dodd Roberts, graduated with his master’s degree in 1955 and undergraduate degree in 1951. Ben expressed his utmost gratitude in being awarded this scholarship.

I appreciate very much Roy Cummings sending me a note about the deaths of Sam Birch and Jack Cerasuolo, who both were his lifelong friends.

Carol and Bill Butler have moved from one part of Midlothian, VA, to a new residence in a senior facility in Midlothian. They are very happy in their new surroundings and wish they had made the move months ago. They do miss doing their beautiful lawn and garden work that they have done so nicely over many years.

Stanley Falkow passed away in May of 2018 in Portola Valley, CA. Stanley was a well-known and respected member of the scientific community who discovered how genetic material could jump from one type of microbe to another and warned against antibiotics in animal feed. He received many awards and taught and researched at Georgetown University and the University of Washington before joining the Stanford faculty in 1982.

This is the shortest column that I have ever written, and I do apologize for the brevity. Please share with me interesting things happening in your lives or latest adventures, etc.

In fact, I challenge each member of the Class of 1955 to send me favorite memories of your days at UMaine that I can share with our classmates. I would love to hear from you, and I will decide and maybe I’ll ask Paul to help me choose the most creative but truthful winner.
