When I picked up the phone to call Dru Nesbit Pedro, I expected to hear how she’d been bowling all winter and that she was looking forward to the start of golf season here in Maine. Instead, Dru told me she had suffered a serious fall resulting in a badly broken right wrist. She said she currently was in a cast from shoulder to the tips of her fingers. Hopefully, Dru, by the time classmates are reading this article in the summer, you will be totally healed and back to your favorite sports.
In September, a group of Phi Mu Deltas living in the southern half of the state of Maine met at the newly constructed “Festbarn” (party barn) in Bridgton, ME, for their monthly luncheon.
Jambalaya was served by the hostess, LuWayne Arnold. Dave Morton ’60, ’62G brought along a party favor he had saved from one of the house parties in 1958 and presented it to the host, Wes English, as a gift with which to decorate the railing of the barn loft. Besides Wes, attendees were Alan “Scrimp” Lewis ’59, Dave Morton, Walter “Andy” Hendrickson ‘58, George Jones ‘56, and Bob Mortimer ‘55. Wes reported, “A jovial time was had by all as we recalled our days at UMaine, and we lifted our steins to an abbreviated version of the ‘Stein Song.’”
Paul Taiganides sold his 2,700 square-foot house in Ohio and moved permanently to the village of Avdou on the island of Crete in Greece to a 270-square-foot house with a bedroom across the courtyard. All his children have also moved to the village, some in 2017 and the rest in 2024, and they have homes within walking distance of each other. Other relatives and friends bought homes or rented homes in Avdou and keep in touch via ATAC which stands for Avdou Taiganides American Colony. Paul said, “We see each other mainly on the beach, swimming, and at the Gorgona tavern for grilled sardines and ouzo on the beach.”
Our president, Jiggs Cecchini ’63G, forwarded our class fund account statement for the period January 01, 2024, through December 31, 2024, which shows the market value at the end of the year was $70,727.16. Jiggs said, “Our ’57 class scholarship continues in a positive way. Next year we’ll give $2,011.” Our scholarship of $1,971 was presented to Layla Blackie, a senior majoring in business management. She lives in Milford, ME, and graduated from Old Town High School.
