Class of 1969 Summer 2019 Class Note

Bill and Andrea Hayes Lott

Remember to save our 50th Reunion dates of September 12 and 13. Come to campus, visit with classmates, take campus tours, attend our Reunion meeting, and then stay for a football game on September 14.

David Dudley ’72G and two fraternity brothers, Tony Krason ‘72, and Mark Sweetland ’72, ’73G, own the 120-year-old Ocean Point Inn in East Boothbay. The three men first went to work at Ocean Point in the summer of 1972, and they bought the inn in 1985. There are 60 rooms in the main inn and 18 rooms in other buildings. The resort’s dining room is open to the public for breakfast and dinner daily.

Dr. Randall Chretien is the worship leader at the Ellsworth United Methodist Church. Randall has also served at the first United Methodist Church (UMC) in Bangor, North Brewer/Eddington UMC, Prospect Harbor UMC, and Baileyville UMC. He and his wife live in Holden.

Dr. Norman P. Libbey is a pathologist at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, RI. One of his University of Maine memories is of Dr. Major, to whom Norman will always be grateful for his teaching, guidance, and support. In the past two years, Sally Shepard McBee has been hiking in various areas around the US and the world, including national parks and the Canadian Rockies. Sally hiked and camped for three weeks in remote mountain regions of Morocco. She was happy to have hiked a section of the Appalachian Trail on her 70th birthday. In March 2019, Sally planned to travel to Nepal to hike part of the Everest Base Camp Trek route. She owns Two Bees Design, a small greeting card company, featuring her original watercolors. For nearly two decades, Sally has lived part of the year in southwestern France.

Maine Sigma Chi brothers recently gathered to support the Sarasota Sigma Chi Alumni Association at the Field Club in Sarasota, FL. What a fun time for UMaine friends to gather and reminisce about good times at Orono while supporting the local Habitat for Humanity! The guys even sang a lovely rendition of “The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi.” Maine Sigma Chis and partners attending were Steve and Jane Survant Bonville ’70, Bob and Maggie Ames Flynn ’70, Greg Johnson ‘68 and his fiancée Carol Hancock, Pat and Donna Violette Maiorino, John McElwee and Kate Debevoise, Mike ’67 and Pat Bradstreet McNamara ’68, and Mike and Carol Gates Rice.

If you’ve enjoyed reading these notes about some of our classmates, just imagine how much fun it will be to connect with classmates in person at our 50th Reunion.

We extend our sympathy to the family of Judy Grout Savary, who died October 3, 2018. Judy was one of my Alpha Phi sisters who attended several of our class reunions. Judy’s son Kenneth earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Maine in 2006 and in 2008.
