George Burgess is chief operating officer at Becker & Poliakoff, a law firm based in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is a senior government relations consultant and also co-chairs the firm’s public private partnership practice team. Fellow UMaine grad Hugo Alvarez ’95 also works at the same firm.
Many thanks to Mark W. Anderson ‘80G, retired UMaine School of Economics faculty member. He and his wife, Lorraine Ostergren, have helped to launch the Ecology and Environmental Sciences (EES) Field Study Fund. The new fund will offset course fees for student participation in EES 217.
In a letter written to EES alumni, Mark reflected on his 37 years of working with students at the University of Maine, and his motivation for seeding the Field Study Fund. “When I stop to think about what makes the single most important difference in a student’s readiness to launch into a professional role, UMaine’s ability to provide hands-on learning opportunities tops the list,” he said.
