Class of 1987 Summer 2023 Class Note

Happy summer, everyone!

I hope you are getting out and enjoying time with family and friends this year.

Kimberly J. Cook is a professor of sociology and criminology at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.

Kimberly was an author and the lead editor of Survivor Criminology – A Radical Act of Hope. The anthology is a collection of survivors’ stories.

Dan Tremble was re-elected to the Bangor City Council in the November 2022 elections.

Shelley Lane is the new superintendent of the Millinocket School Department. She is the former director of state schools located in the Unorganized Territory, a Maine Department of Education position. Previously, she had been principal of Kingman Elementary School in Kingman and a teacher at Benedicta Elementary School in Aroostook County.

On April 17, 2023, I ran the Boston Marathon for the 10th time. I first ran Boston in 2003 and over the past 20 years I’ve run 20 marathons in total, including the 10 Bostons.

I started running when I worked at Hewlett-Packard, which was a sponsor of the Boston Marathon. As a sponsor, HP received 100 entries which they gave to employees through a raffle. I was lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time.

If not for that lucky coincidence, I may never have taken up running.

Over the years I’ve had several injuries, like most runners have. This year was no different. With too much time on my hands during COVID I was injured about two years ago and spent 21 months receiving physical therapy!

It wasn’t a severe injury, but one thing led to another. By race day my PT had me patched up enough to run the race in 4:43.

Let us know what you are up to. Retiring? Starting a new life adventure? Maybe taking up a new sport like running or pickleball? Going back to school?
