Robin Colby G was honored by the Foreign Language Association Teachers of Maine (FLAME) this spring, in recognition of her work at Messalonskee High School in Oakland. FLAME cited her exemplary work teaching Latin and Greek, as well as her additional effort as a class adviser, National Education Association delegate, and advocate for language education in her selection for the FLAME Richard Williamson Award for Leadership.

Colin Holme has a new role leading the Lakes Environmental Association, based in Bridgton. Colin began his work as an intern, shortly after graduating from UMaine. He led the Association’s water testing and mapping programs before becoming development director, and then in January 2018, executive director. The group began its work advocating for Maine lakes in 1970, and has led statewide efforts to reduce the spread of invasive aquatic plants, including milfoil. LEA is also known for its water quality research and phosphorus management planning to reduce the impact of pollution on lakes. “We’re a lakes community, Colin told the Bangor Daily News. “A goal of mine is to get everyone to understand lakes … by working holistically with the community, we can grow.” Follow his ongoing work at: http://www.mainelakes.org/.

Hockey player Steve Kariya was featured in a Bangor Daily News article about the upcoming 20th anniversary of the 1999 Black Bears NCAA championship, beating the University of New Hampshire 3-2 in overtime. He talked about the unique atmosphere at Alfond Arena, and the energy of the student section — where many of us remember spending a Friday night chanting, “Sieve, sieve!” Steve’s years at UMaine were key to his professional career, he said, preparing him to play for Vancouver Canucks and as a top scorer with several European teams. In more recent years, he’s been scouting for the New Jersey Devils, and has returned home to British Columbia and taken up curling.

Mary Alice McLean, who earned a certificate of advanced study in educational leadership at UMaine, was been named superintendent of RSU 71 (Midcoast region) in July. She has worked in school administration across New England for many years, and most recently served as principal of Belfast Area High School.
