Class of 2002 Winter 2022 Class Note

Hello, Class of 2002!

Classmates are in the news!

Jon Solomon, the current varsity football coach in Houlton, ME, was confirmed as the new athletic director for RSU 29 (Houlton, Hammond, Littleton, and Monticello). Jon has served in many different roles in the RSU 29 district since moving there in 2016.

If you keep up with “Bear Tracks,” the monthly newsletter emailed from the UMaine Alumni Association, you would have seen a spotlight on Kristy Townsend and her co-founder on their Maine-based biotech company, Neuright. Their company is working to create a medical device to aid in the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy. Check out the “Innovators of UMaine” interview!

Alanna Hounsell Stevenson was named the new principal of Saint Dominic Academy for both their Auburn and Lewiston campuses. For the past two years, Alanna has been the principal at the St. Dominic Lewiston campus.

Dirigo Reads, a program launched by Karen Sanborn Cashman ’04G and her husband, Dan ’00, continues to grow and expand its outreach to schoolchildren across the state. Dirigo Reads is striving to provide a book to every Maine first-grader each month of the school year by the year 2025. Last year they gave out over 8,000 books and were able to add 50 new schools for this current academic year. Check out their efforts at dirigoreads.org. Karen is a fellow Bangor Region Leadership Institute (BRLI) classmate of mine as well, and is showing once again why the BRLI Class of ’08 (and UMaine Class of ’02) are the best!

To close out this month’s highlights, congratulations are in order for Anna Kettell Biddle, as she recently joined the team at Sebago Technics. Anna is a Maine-licensed soil scientist and nutrient management specialist and joined the Sebago Technics team as an environmental scientist/permitting specialist.

Save the date and be on the lookout for updates on our 20th Reunion, which we’ll be celebrating next October 2022 at Homecoming! We’d love to see you there and reconnect, and we’re always looking for volunteers.
