Class of 2019 Winter 2021 Class Note

Kathleen “Katie” Later has joined Sutherland Weston Marketing Communications
as an account executive.

When Alyssa Derrick showed off her throwing arm in a video, launching a football
across a parking lot, the video went viral. That caught the attention of the owner
of the Houston Stampede of the Women’s Football League Association. Alyssa,
a former UMaine softball player, has signed with the team and is now working on
her football skills.

Kristen Van Meter G is a nurse serving on board the hospital ship USNS Mercy,
a floating hospital that was deployed to respond to the nation’s COVID-19
pandemic.

Jenna Gilbert joined Sevee & Maher Engineers (SME), headquartered in
Cumberland, ME. Her work at SME includes a variety of assignments primarily in
civil design and engineering, stormwater management, and permitting.

Another engineer, Kaitlyn Chick, works at Wood Environment & Infrastructure
Solutions in Portland. She specializes in environmental engineering.

Congratulations to Maylinda Boynton, who was crowned USA National Miss
Maine 2021. Maylinda is a grad student, studying human development. She won
the Spokesmodel Award for her presentation of a video advocating for Camp
Kesem at the University of Maine. The camp offers free summer camps for
children who have been impacted by a parent’s cancer. She also won the Role
Model Award, and played the tuba for the talent portion of the competition.

The Class of 2019 needs a class correspondent who will write the news for future
magazines. Please contact abigail.zelz@maine.edu if you would like to represent
the class. No special talents are needed — just a willingness to write the class
column twice a year — and the Alumni Association helps gather the news.
Have a good winter!
