You might have read about the university’s plans to change the name of Little Hall, named for Dr. Clarence Cook Little, a former president, because of his involvement with the study of eugenics. Richard Little, his son, penned a letter to the Bangor Daily News (July 13) in defense of his father and his dad’s…
Judy Ohr So nice to hear from a fellow journalism major, Ron Drogin, who wrote a weekly sports column for the Campus. He says he chose not to pursue that career after graduation, fearing he might be working in some small Maine town, not being able to afford a lobster dinner. Now he is back…
Weekends at Maine University begin early Friday afternoon when a big, boxlike green truck, with the fancy yellow inscription, “Eastern Maine Egg Company,” goes rumbling south toward Orono on highway 2A. The driver is an enterprising young man known to most of Maine’s 4,400 students as Cannonball. Cannonball is working his way through school by…
Judy Ohr And a good time was had by all. What a marvelous class celebration in Boothbay Harbor in September. A big thank you to co-chairs Ian MacKinnon ’70G and Shirlene Heath Gosline ’73G along with their committee Anne Wescott Dodd ’82 C.A.S., ’94 Ed.D., Ann Lynch MacKinnon, Meg Thompson Villarreal, Pete Berry, and Ellen…
Judy Ohr Only a few more months until our mini-Reunion in Boothbay Harbor this September. You should have received a mailing with a reservation form. If you didn’t receive the information (or have misplaced it), email me. Additional information is on our webpage at UMaineAlumni.com, class notes, class page, 1961. Also if you haven’t accessed…
Another school year will soon start and “our class” of 2020 are now sophomores. They are beginning to think about, if not choose, majors, and are contemplating life after Orono. We are trying to come up with creative ways to reach out to this group and provide some support as mentors and alumni. We can do it face-to-face at University events — tailgates, Maine Day, Homecoming–or online. Maybe a quick profile of your academic choices and their value in your career? Would you be willing to interact with one or several students? I can guarantee you would enjoy it! They are an amazing group of young men and women. We want to demonstrate to them that the contacts made on campus will extend and expand once graduated. Suggestions, ideas, and comments are welcome. Would also love to have some volunteers to help with some on-campus outreach. Contact Meg Thompson Villarreal: Email mvillarreal2@earthlink.net or call 207-729-3274.
